Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a facial plastic surgery procedure to improve the shape, symmetry, and function of the nose. This operation can improve your breathing if you have a deviated septum.
Your nose is your most prominent facial feature, but if it is overly large, has a hump on the bridge, be too wide, or have another aesthetic flaw, it can be reshaped to create facial harmony.
Correcting your nose shape with custom nose surgery can dramatically enhance your other facial features.
Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty can boost your confidence, improve your self-esteem, and even have a positive psychological effect. You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you have reached full growth, are in good physical condition, and are unhappy with the size or shape of your nose. Custom nose surgery tailored to you may be advised if you have a deviated septum or a nasal defect impairing your breathing.

You will have splints on top of your nose for support during the first few days of your recovery. You can expect some mild swelling, which is normal and should subside within a few weeks. Minimal bruising is possible, but Dr. Mangat’s unique, meticulous surgical technique eliminates the risk of forming severe “black eyes” after surgery. Medications will be prescribed to reduce discomfort, promote healing, and reduce the risk of infection. Avoid strenuous exercise for three to six weeks after surgery, or as instructed by our team. You can expect to return to social activities within two to three weeks.
What should I expect with rhinoplasty?
A nose reshaping procedure is typically performed with local anesthetic and intravenous, “twilight,” sedation.
It may be performed as either a closed procedure, with all incisions inside the nose, or an open procedure, with an incision across the columella (narrow strip of tissue separating the nostrils). We will recommend the best surgical approach for you.
The overlying skin and tissue are gently lifted, and the nose is sculpted through the incisions to improve shape, size, and breathing.
Skin and tissue are re-draped, and the incisions are closed with sutures.
What is septoplasty?
When the nasal septum has deviated, meaning when the cartilage separating the nostrils has shifted to one side and creates a blockage, the patient’s breathing may suffer and may experience nosebleeds, headaches, and chronic discomfort. Septoplasty corrects the alignment of the septum, inviting the free flow of air through the nasal passageways.
How is septoplasty performed?
Septoplasty takes 1-2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. It is considered an outpatient procedure. The surgeon’s objective is to improve the position and angle of the cartilage within the nose. An incision is made within one nostril to gain access to the septum. Once the nasal lining has been lifted, the surgeon will then align the deviated septum to maximize breathing. Some bone and cartilage may be removed during the process. The mucous membrane is then replaced and sutures are placed to keep the septum from reverting to its previous position.
When will my final results be apparent?
After rhinoplasty, you may have minor swelling of the nose and around the eyes that typically lasts two weeks. After two weeks, there may be a small amount of swelling that persists, which will subside completely over the next several months. When healing is complete, your final results will be apparent.
Can I go home after a rhinoplasty?
Yes, rhinoplasty is generally performed as an outpatient procedure. Because of the "twilight" anesthesia used, you will need someone to drive you home after surgery.
Is rhinoplasty covered by health insurance?
Cosmetic surgery is not generally covered by health insurance. However, if there is a functional component of the surgery, to correct a deviated septum, for example, your insurance may cover that portion of the procedure. Although we do not take insurance, we can provide you the information needed to submit to your insurance company.
Will the nose look natural after surgery?
Yes, our skilled surgeon will create a nose that is proportionate to your face for a natural look.
Will the nose be packed with gauze?
No, a simple splint will be applied to the nose, which will be worn for approximately one week. With Dr. Mangat's unique, meticulous technique, no packing is required.
Will nasal surgery correct my deviated septum?
A deviated septum is corrected with a procedure called a septoplasty, which improves breathing. This is a separate procedure but can be done at the same time the cosmetic rhinoplasty is performed.
Will my eyes turn black and blue after nasal surgery?
Dr. Mangat’s unique, meticulous surgical technique eliminates the risk of forming severe “black eyes” after surgery. Some patients experience minor bruising and swelling. Cold compresses applied to the area and sleeping with the head elevated can improve this more quickly.
Can I blow my nose?
You must refrain from blowing your nose for about a week.
