Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

It is important to understand that liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure. Ideal candidates have achieved an ideal weight for their height and body shape, are generally in good health and do not smoke. Liposuction in the Aspen area might be right for you if you meet the criteria and have unwanted deposits of fat on any of the following areas of the body:

  • Stomach
  • Love handles
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Calves
  • Upper arms
  • Under the chin

State-of-the-Art Liposuction Techniques

At Mangat Copit Plastic Surgery, we perform two types of liposuction based on your unique needs:

  • Tumescent: The tumescent liposuction technique involves injections of a combination of a local anesthetic (to numb the treatment area), saltwater (to cause the fatty tissue to swell up), and adrenaline (to shrink the blood vessels and minimize bleeding). The amount of fluid that is injected will correspond to the amount of fat removal. Once the fatty tissue has swelled up, it is extracted using a cannula, a suctioning device shaped like a narrow tube. The tumescent technique is associated with less bleeding and bruising than traditional liposuction.
  • PAL: MicroAire’s PAL® LipoSculptor™ is a cannula that uses a reciprocating motion on its tip to break up and suction out fat with increased ease. The PAL liposuction technique results in less trauma to surrounding tissues and minimized discomfort after surgery.

Your Liposuction Procedure in the Aspen, Breckenridge, and Vail Valley Areas

Liposuction usually takes about two hours to perform, and involves the following steps:

  • Surgical markings are made on the area of the body being treated
  • If necessary, the patient is put under general anesthesia
  • An antibacterial solution is applied to sterilize the treatment site
  • The tumescent solution is injected into the treatment area
  • A small incision or incisions are made
  • The cannula is inserted in the incision or incisions to vacuum out fat
  • The incisions are closed
  • The treatment area is cleaned, and compression bandages or garments are applied

Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck
Which Should I Choose?

Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck: Which should I choose?

Is Liposuction Safe?

Liposuction is one of the most popular and common cosmetic procedures in the world, with a very high success rate and low risk of complications. During your initial consultation, we will review your medical history to ensure the procedure is safe for you, and we will be available throughout your recovery to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Though rare, liposuction is associated with some risk, including:

  • Infection
  • Allergic reaction to medical materials
  • Loose skin (this can be treated with a tummy tuck)
  • Skin unevenness
  • Nerve damage
  • Bleeding
  • Hematoma
  • Blood or fluid loss
  • Permanent skin numbness

Your Recovery After Liposuction

You can expect to be in recovery after the procedure for the first week or so. If you have more than 10 pounds of fat removed, you will be required to stay in the hospital overnight for monitoring. Otherwise, you will be discharged after your procedure to recover at home. You can expect some pain for the first four or five days after surgery, but this pain is easily managed with prescription pain medication. Swelling may last for up to three weeks, and bruising may last for up to a month, though these side effects are most noticeable during the first week. Ice can be applied to minimize swelling and bruising.

Strenuous activity must be avoided for two weeks. At that time, you can start exercising again, but should not lift anything that weighs more than 10 pounds. For one week after surgery, you should wear your liposuction compression garment at all times, except when showering. After the first week, you can switch to a lycra or spandex compression garment, which should be worn for an additional five weeks. Avoid sun exposure to the incision site for six months after surgery. If you are out in the sun, be sure to protect the incisions with bandages or sunscreen.
