Ear Pinning Surgery Who is a good candidate for ear pinning?

Ears that stick out are a frequent source of embarrassment for children in school or on the playground, but the good news is that this congenital issue—typically caused by poorly-shaped or overdeveloped ear cartilage—can be corrected with a custom ear surgery at Mangat Copit Plastic Surgery. Otoplasty is commonly performed on children as early as age five, and many adults undergo this procedure, as well.

What can I expect with an ear pinning procedure?

  • Otoplasty is commonly performed with intravenous sedation and local anesthesia, but can also be performed as an outpatient procedure with general anesthesia.
  • Different surgical techniques can be used, depending on the corrections required.
  • The incision is typically placed on the backside of the ear. If on a rare occasion an incision on the front of the ear is necessary, it is placed within the natural folds of the ear, to effectively hide the scar.
  • Cartilage may be sculpted or removed in some cases, in which case the ear structure will be moved toward the head and held in place with non-removable sutures.
  • Once the procedure is complete, Dr. Mangat and Dr. Copit will secure the ear cartilage and close the incision with sutures.

Results speak for themselves.

What is the recovery process like after ear pinning?

After an ear pinning procedure, you will return home with a bandage and compression dressing to hold the ear in place. The bandage is removed at 72 hours; sutures are absorbable and do not have to be removed. You will not be able to wear glasses or earrings for about three weeks; you will look presentable to appear in public in 3-4 days. You may experience slight swelling, itching, redness, and numbness, which should resolve within a few weeks. Post-operative pain can be controlled with medication. You may need to wear an elastic headband at night and during the day, whenever possible, for several weeks to support the ears.
