Candidates for Male Breast Reduction

The ideal candidates for male breast reduction are teenage and adult men who suffer from the embarrassing effects of enlarged male breast tissue. Correcting this condition at an early age can help your child avoid unnecessary bullying and feelings of insecurity during their formative years, and it is never too late to make a change for the better.

As this is a surgical procedure, your candidacy can only be determined after an in-person consultation with one of our talented surgeons, where we will review your medical history and ensure the procedure is safe and right for you. Candidates for male breast reduction in the Aspen, Breckenridge, and Vail Valley areas should be at or near their ideal weight, be in good health, and not smoke.

What Are the Causes of Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a natural condition that is often due entirely to genetics. It may be caused by:

  • Hormone changes such as those that occur during puberty
  • Aging, which is associated with weight gain and a loss of progesterone
  • Genetics
  • Weight gain
  • Certain medical conditions, including tumors, hypogonadism, hyperthyroidism, kidney failure, liver failure, cirrhosis, malnutrition
  • Certain medications, including anabolic steroids, anti-androgens, tricyclic antidepressants, antibiotics, and chemotherapy; anti-anxiety, ulcer, heart, and AIDS medications are also associated with the development of gynecomastia
  • Use of illegal drugs such as marijuana, amphetamines, heroin, and methadone
  • Excessive use of alcohol

Male Breast Reduction: Surgical Techniques

Depending on your unique condition, our surgeons may employ one or more of the following surgical techniques for your male breast reduction procedure in the Aspen, Breckenridge, and Vail Valley areas:

Liposuction

Liposuction is ideal for patients who have an excess of fat tissue and good skin contraction. Tiny incisions are made in each breast, and the breast tissue is suctioned out. Tumescent fluid is injected into the tissue to facilitate the removal of tissue, and if the breast tissue is especially dense, a specialized grinding cannula may be used to extract the breast tissue.

Skin Excision

If you have an excess of breast tissue and loose skin on your chest, skin excision techniques are employed. In this approach, incisions are usually placed around the areola. If greater amounts of skin removal are required, an additional incision may be made in the chest’s crease or an incision that extends out in either direction from the outer edges of the areolas. These larger incisions enable our surgeons to re-sculpt your chest and produce a distinctly masculine, improved aesthetic by removing breast tissue, glands, and skin.

What Should I Expect from My Male Breast Reduction?

Male breast reduction takes about two hours and includes the following basic steps:

  • The chest incisions are marked with a surgical pen
  • The patient is put under general anesthesia
  • An antibacterial solution is smoothed over the chest to reduce the risk of infection
  • The incisions are made in the breasts
  • Liposuction may be performed to remove excess breast tissue
  • Excess breast tissue and skin is excised
  • The skin is re-draped over the chest, and the incisions are closed
  • The chest is checked for symmetry
  • The treatment area is cleaned
  • Medical tape and bandages are applied
  • The patient is put in a compression garment

What is Recovery Like After Male Breast Reduction?

As with any surgical procedure, there is a significant recovery period after male breast reduction. During the first week after surgery, you may experience some discomfort, bruising, and swelling in the treatment area, and we'll help you manage the discomfort with pain medication, ice, rest, and elevation of the head.

By the second week after surgery, you can expect to feel better, and be ready to return to most of your normal routines. However, heavy exercise should be avoided for an additional one to two weeks. Your compression garment should be worn at all times for at least a month after surgery, as doing so will greatly improve your final outcome.

Is Male Breast Reduction Safe?

Thousands of men successfully undergo male breast reduction each year, and it is generally considered a very safe, effective procedure when performed by a qualified surgeon. Complications are rare, but may include:

  • Allergic reaction
  • Infection
  • Slow healing of the incisions
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Bleeding
  • Hematoma

Your Gynecomastia Surgery Results in the Aspen, Breckenridge, and Vail Valley areas:

The improvements to your figure will be noticeable immediately after surgery, but your final results will not be visible until your chest has fully healed. It often takes anywhere between one and three months for all residual swelling to go down and reveal your enhanced, manly chest. Any visible scarring will gradually fade, with most scars becoming virtually invisible within the first year.
